Locations where the presence of combustible dust present a fire or explosion hazard. Locations where easily ignitable fibers or flyings are present but not likely to be suspended in the air in quantities sufficient to produce ignitable mixtures.

Explosion proof is a protection technology that guarantees the housing or enclosure has been designed and constructed in such a way that it is capable of containing, controlling and venting any possible flash or explosion.

The most common values used are: Zone 0: Explosive atmosphere for more than 1000h/yr. Zone 1: Explosive atmosphere for more than 10, but less than 1000 h/yr. Zone 2: Explosive atmosphere for less than 10h/yr, but still sufficiently likely as to require controls over ignition sources.

Class 1 Division 1 equipment provides maximum protection in high-risk areas, while Class 1 Division 2 equipment offers cost-effective solutions for less hazardous zones.

Class I, Division 1 locations are where hazardous atmosphere may be present during normal operations.

Explosion-proof enclosures are required to be designed to withstand a minimum internal pressure of 150 psig (10.34 bar).

The enclosure needs to be able to safely contain any explosion and the accompanying pressure that develops and prevent any fire or sparks from escaping the enclosure and into the surrounding explosive environments. Equipment that has this standard can be products such as control equipment or transformers.

Electrical equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres must comply with the main certification standards: CEI, CENELEC and NEC. The standards of the IEC (International Electronic Commission) are accepted in practically all countries.

For Class I locations, use explosion-proof equipment and proper ventilation to handle flammable gases or vapors. Class II locations require dust-tight equipment and dust control to manage combustible dust hazards. In Class III locations, protect against ignitable fibers with proper enclosures and handling protocols.

C1D2, or Class 1 Division 2, is a hazardous location classification defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC). These areas are spaces where flammable gases or vapors may be present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures under abnormal conditions.

All electrical connections must be checked regularly against damage. Emergency Shutdown: C1D2 locations should have emergency systems in place. These systems should shut down equipment to cut off flammable flow during an incident. Fire Extinguishing Systems: C1D2 locations must be employed with emergency fire systems.

Seals are required for each run of conduit entering or leaving a Class I, Zone 2 location. Seals may be either inside or outside of the hazardous area but they must be at the first joint in the conduit. Combination type motor controller approved for the Class and Group of hazard.
